Late Spring SCCA and SCNAX Solo Auto X
I ran by Qualcomm Stadium today to catch part of the SCCA and SCNAX hosted Solo 2 Auto X event. Turned out to be quite a fun morning during late spring. The most impressive part of the event is the vast participation of different age groups and different cars.
I say late spring because although it isn’t May yet the weather’s been getting quite hot. Actually, morning’s have been crazy chilly but by mid-day if the breeze isn’t blowing the sun feels like Arizona sun. Not quite, but you get the idea. Still, the sun isn’t burning anything more than the drivers are scorching their tires on Qualcomm Stadium’s vast lot. There is no shortage of drivers pushing their everyday cars to the edges of limit.
If you were wondering, SCCA stands for Sports Car Club of America and SCNAX is Sports Compact National Auto X Club. The field is pretty varied, but standouts are some of the usual autocross suspects… Mazda Miata, Honda S2000, Subaru WRX and STI, Mitsubishi Evo and the occasional Mustang and Corvette. One newcomer standout is the Scion FRS / Subaru BRZ which today easily saw at least 5 of those. They look really good on the course by the way. But by far, the biggest participation was MX-5 Miatas… Because they kickass. But I may be a little biased.

The SCCA Solo 2 autocross events are very exciting and participating is easy. The best part is you can run just about anything as long as it’s safe. I’ve heard plenty of stories of people running odd things like a Prius, Ford Escort Wagon, big and heavy commuter sedans and other funny things like that. Generally, during a weekend event, Saturday is the practice day, then the actual championship competition is held on Sunday.
The latest stories on RallyWays have been quite long-winded and detailed. For this one I just want to leave you with a short blurb about this event and a couple of pics. I would also encourage you to find out more about autocross and consider checking out one of the events. Furthermore, I’d encourage you to come drive as well. You don’t even need a manual car… any ol’ automatic would do just fine. The sport is for guys AND girls. In fact, the grey Shinsen Miata at the top of this story is driven by my friend Ginny McLaughlin. Yes, she’s a girl.
